DIY - the Halloween pumpkin

For a successful Halloween party, don't forget the pumpkin! This autumnal vegetable is a real icon and will invade every home on the evening of 31 October. An activity that will involve the whole family. Here are the steps to make your pumpkin a success:

1. Choose a beautiful Halloween pumpkin

Don't confuse pumpkins with pumpkins. The real pumpkin is bright orange, round, and usually weighs 5 kilos with a green stalk.

2. Cut off the top of the pumpkin

This difficult step is reserved for adults, to prevent the little "monsters" from cutting themselves. Cut off the top of the pumpkin (where the green stalk is) to make a small hat. This hat can be put back on the pumpkin at the end of the activity.

3. Dig out the pumpkin to empty it

Removing the flesh from the pumpkin is no easy task. Use an ice cream scoop or a large spoon. Scrape the inside of the pumpkin as if it were an ice cream scoop.

4. Draw the pumpkin's face

Here's an assignment for the kids! Draw a "monster" face on the pumpkin with a marker. It's best to use a water-based marker so that your lines can be easily erased if you don't follow the cut-out exactly. Make straight, geometric shapes. Triangles, lightning bolts, it will be easier to cut out the pumpkin!

5. Cut out the pumpkin's face

Cutting is the most delicate step, again for adults as the pumpkin skin is very hard to pierce. Using a sharp knife, follow the lines drawn in marker. Start with the eyes, the nose and then the mouth.

6. Add the candle

Now all you have to do is insert a candle inside your pumpkin. Choose a large candle so that it burns brightly every night during the Halloween season.

7. Using leftover pumpkin

Keep the pumpkin flesh to make a good mash or a delicious Halloween soup. You can also use the pumpkin seeds to make toasted seeds. It's very simple to make: put your seeds in a bowl and add the spices of your choice (paprika, herbes de Provence, Espelette pepper), fleur de sel and a spoonful of olive oil. Mix and pour onto a baking tray covered with baking paper. Place in the oven for about 15 minutes. This is a healthy and original snack for the aperitif!
